BASF offers effective solution to durable connection between contraction joints and road pavement

One of the strategic sessions of BASF Construction Congress, which was held in autumn in Sochi, was devoted to operation of contraction joints and aroused strong interest among bridge builders and road builders from all over Russia. BASF company — the world's leading producer of construction chemicals — demonstrated the features of Wabocrete II system. Three-component polyurethane-based polymer-concrete compound can effectively solve the problem of durability and reliability of transition zone between the road bed and contraction joints.

Reliability and durability of connection between contraction joints and road pavement is a serious problem of road and bridge building. Damages that cause premature failure of joint and reduce the period between scheduled preventive repairs are related to a wide range of problems, including heavy dynamic loads due to difference in rigidity of the damping zone and the adjacent zone of the road bed, violations of contraction joints and transition zones arrangement technology, poor-quality materials, etc.

Wabocrete II system can become a solution to these problems. It was tested for several years in different climatic zones of Russia, including Southern Federal District and the Altai Territory, and has proved to be effective in creating transition zones of contraction joints, restoring their edges and joint grouting.

Unlike the standard solutions (bitumen, polymeric-bitumen, epoxy and other systems), Wabocrete II ensures:

  • Absorption of impact loads and transfer of the same to the base (which results in reduction of noise level at the time of contraction joint crossing) without permanent deformations;
  • Resistance to ultraviolet, ice-melting chemicals and increased resistance to abrasing effects;
  • Quick pick up of properties — possibility of working in "gaps" (movement on the material is possible in 2 hours after laying);
  • Stable parameters within a wide range of temperatures;
  • Cold laying.

The system makes it possible to increase the service life of contraction joint up to 10 years and more, depending on operation conditions.

Presentation of the new product aroused interest among the congress participants, including specialists of Management Offices of federal and regional roads, representatives of RADOR association, and experts from research institutes.

"We believe that Wabocrete II is the optimal solution in our adverse climatic conditions," — says Maria Ledina, Head of the Transport Department at BASF company. "Especially for highways and bridges under considerable traffic load. It will simplify and accelerate road works and ensure significant saving through increase in the service life of contraction joints and reduction of labor input."

This solution has already found successful application at facilities in the Russian regions under different climatic conditions. "Wabocrete II was used for arrangement of transition zone on contraction joints at the overhead crossing 202+410 km (right) of Federal Highway R–256 Chuysky Trakt Novosibirsk — Barnaul — Gorno-Altaisk — border with Mongolia. Under operation conditions at temperatures ranging from –40 °С to +40 °С, under single loads up to 80 tons and up to 30 tons in common stream and with traffic density up to 16,500 cars per natural day, the material demonstrated its stated properties: high impact viscosity and elasticity even under low temperatures; lack of cracks or breaks in the joint adjacent zone; lack of wheel tracking; smooth and practically noiseless traffic of motor transport," notes Yaroslav Dolinsky, Department Head, Federal State Institution Altai Road Management Office.

Wabocrete II was also used in repair of the bridge across the Techa river at 54+930 km of Federal Highway M-5 Ural Moscow — Ryazan — Penza — Samara — Ufa — Chelyabinsk. Traffic density at this section of the highway is 14,723 cars per natural day. Temperatures during the operation period ranged from –32 °С to +37 °С. "During the period of bridge operation from October 2015 to September 2016, the material demonstrated the properties stated by the producer. Federal State Institution Uzhny Ural Road Management Office intends to use Wabocrete II in its subsequent projects for replacement and repair of bridgeworks," adds Aleksey Babykin, Head of the Technical Department of Federal State Institution Uzhny Ural Road Management Office.

Three-component polymer-concrete compound Wabocrete II also demonstrated its positive characteristics and stated properties during repair of the contraction joint transition zone on Krasavinskiy bridge across Kama in Perm. According to the specialists, this material seals transition zones of the contraction joint and increases smoothness of traffic at distant sections.

Seven reports on strategic solving of road building tasks were presented in total at the strategic session Problems of Contraction Joints Operation and Possible Solutions. Based on their results, specialists held a thoughtful and useful discussion.
